CHEERS AND JEERS

CHEERS

CHEERS go to this year’s FCW’s RISING STARS.  At a time when our government  is concerned about high attrition as the Baby Boomer generation retires from public service, the Rising Stars are proof positive that public service is important, that one person can make a difference, and that our government agencies can attract a new generation of leaders.  Too often, the focus is on the negative: scandals and the sensational.  And, if these “Stars” continue on their current path of providing innovative, superior service for the American Taxpayer, then the future of public service in our country is in good hands.  The challenge will be to keep these Rising Stars motivated and engaged;  one idea might be to follow up one year and even five years from now to find out where they are and how they are doing.     http://www.fcw.com/print/22_26/features/153510-1.html  And  http://www.govexec.com/story_page.cfm?filepath=/dailyfed/0808/081908e1.htm

JEERS

JEERS  to Senator Charles Grassley for placing a hold on the confirmation of Jim Williams as the next GSA Administrator.  In a recent statement, Senator Grassley said that he still has questions that need to be answered.   The Senator has been irresponsible in persisting with the notion that GSA improperly awarded a contract to Sun Microsystems.   Senator Grassley has heard directly from the GSA contracting officer responsible, the CEO of Sun Microsystems, the GSA Administrator, the GSA General Counsel and countless others, and has even chastised the GSA IG in an October 2007 memo.  Senator Grassley’s misguided crusade has not only unfairly damaged reputations but has come at significant costs to taxpayers.   The real questions, for many, surround Senator Grassley’s own conduct in the matter of SUN MIcrosystems.   The way I see it, the only person in this whole, sad episode that has actively campaigned to overturn the decisions of a career federal contracting officer was Senator Grassley himself.    http://www.govexec.com/story_page.cfm?filepath=/dailyfed/0808/081908e1.htm
