Cheers to Secretary Henry Paulson and his tireless team, for their efforts at Treasury, grappling with one financial crisis after another: the demise of BearStearns, Lehman Brothers, the housing downturn, subprime mess, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, AIG and troubled Merrill Lynch. What a stunningly busy summer! And the long hours aren't over as the Treasury team works with Wall Street and Congress to determine the execution strategy and proposal for moving forward. Kudos for the grueling hours to craft a complex strategy to provide support and quiet the fears, not just of the US, but the entire world.
Jeers to the Small Business Administration's Sandy Baruah and his senior leadership for showing exactly what not to do, namely, take off on what appears to be a bona fide boondoggle to Sweden, rather than be on hand, in Texas, during the Hurricane crisis. This is shameful kind of behavior and dereliction of duty from Agency leaders (Chief of staff Molly Wilkinson, and policy aide, Mark Meredith). How can leaders possibly hope that career government employees will show initiative and act autonomously when they set such a poor example? (Oh, BTW, I checked: several flights were available for a quick return to deal with the aftermath of the hurricane in Texas.) Shame on them.
